Spring Program
Where's the Water?
The current drought in New Mexico causes many of us to wonder "where is the water?" The 2003 NMGIC Spring meeting is devoting its program to water issues in the Land of Enchantment. The NMGIC Board is proud to offer a program on this important topic that is very near and dear to all of us. The two-day event begins with a day-long workshop on the National Hydrologic Dataset that will be presented by Jeff Simley of the NHD Program of USGS. The second day is devoted to presentations by experts in New Mexico water issues. Please join us…..and mark your calendar for April 24-25, 2003.

Thursday, April 24: National Hydrologic Dataset Workshop
A Free Workshop on
Utilizing the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD)
Presented by Jeff Simley, U.S. Geological Survey, Denver
Attendance open to all NMGIC members.
The NHD combines elements of USGS digital line graph (DLG) hydrography files with USEPA reach files (RF3) to provide comprehensive coverage of hydrographic data for the U.S. Hydrographic feature names come from the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), complete with GNIS identification numbers. It is ideal for many hydrologic modeling and statistical applications. Currently, there is High Resolution NHD coverage for 20 subbasins in New Mexico available at no cost. Come learn how you can put the NHD to work for you!
Agenda 8:30 am Introduction 8:40 am National Hydrography Dataset Overview - Program and Applications - powerpoint presentation 9:40 am Getting Started - Download the NHD and look at it - live demonstration 10:00 am Break 10:15 am Navigating through the network - tracing the flow of water throughout the hydrologic network 10:30 am Reach Indexing - how to link your attributes to spatial data 10:45 am The NHD Extensions in ArcView - the tools that bring instant power to the NHD 11:00 am Creating the NHD workspace in ArcView - setting up the data so you can use the tools 11:10 am Explore the NHD data - a detailed look at what is going on in a subbasin 11:30 am Lunch - Lunch is on you own. Restaurants nearby and in the building. 12:30 pm Analyze the NHD tables - a detailed look at the fields in the tables and how tables relate 1:00 pm Reach Indexing - a more detailed look at point, line, and area indexing 1:30 pm Streamgages - download streamgage information for use with the NHD 1:15 pm Streamgage Events - linking the streamgages to make them integral with the NHD 1:30 pm Streamgage Linear Events - using the network to create a linear event of streamflow 1:45 pm Make a Map of Streamflow - symbolizing the events to make an effective map 2:00 pm Break 2:15 pm Using Multiple Subbasins - how to work with larger areas 2:45 pm Editing the NHD - revising names and flow 3:30 pm The NHD in Geodatabase 4:00 pm Adjourn
